| The WEEE-Directive in Europe
The European WEEE-Directive obliges all manufacturers and importers ("initial vendors") of electrical and electronic products to take the latter back when they are no longer in use.

 The RoHS-Directive in Europe
The RoHS-Directive interdicts after the 30. June 2006 to put on to the market certain, new electrical and electronic equippment which contains Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE).

The Electrics and Electronics Legislation in Germany
The implementation of the European Directives (WEEE / RoHS) in German law is the Electrics and Electronics Legislation (ElektroG). It formulates the important implementation stipulations for Germany and distinguishes between used equipment from the private sector and that which is in commercial use.
Safety and emergency luminaires are covered by commercial use (B2B).
However, only self-contained luminaires, which fulfil their intended function even without connection to a higher-ranking system, are equipment in the sense of §3 paragraph 1 ElektroG and therefore come within the area of application of the law (ElektroG).
Safety and emergency luminaires for central supply systems are part of the technical bulding equipment because they are part of a higher-ranking system i.e. when they are used for their intended purpose they have to be connected to a central emergency supply system and/or to a central control and monitoring device. These luminaires are excluded from the area of application of the ElektroG.
